@EduIndie - Bringing Together Indies Making Educational Games

Yesterday, I had an idea.

I've been thinking a lot about what small studios who make educational games can do to be heard above the din and clamor of the rest of the games industry.  In the past 6 months I've been reaching out individually to studios making interesting things, and recently put together a Google group to bring all of these folks together (if you're an indie making educational games, please join us!)

This has helped bring the developers together, but our audiences are still fragmented.  If someone was interested in Studio A, they didn't really have an easy way to discover Studio B, C and D who were doing similarly amazing work.  It occurred to me that a Twitter feed that retweets from all of these studios could be an interesting thing.  It would let people gain exposure to a wide variety of studios by following just one Twitter account.  On a whim I created @EduIndie.  I reached out to folks to help me build the list of studios, as well as to get some attention for the feed, and Wow!  In just one day I've discovered 40 studios to follow, and nearly 100 people have followed the account.  We've received input from Games for Change, Game-Based Learning NYC, and many individuals who have reached out.

This is only day one!  My hope is that @EduIndie can become a place where people discover new studios and new learning games.  Small studios don't have the deep pockets of larger companies, so when we band together like this to help our players discover other amazing games we all win.  Please help us spread the word!

Welcome Gates, Volume Sliders, and Bug Fixes: Update 0.8.1

Our first major update on Steam Early Access is live.  If you haven't grabbed a copy of the game yet, check it out on Steam!  Here's what's new and updated in 0.8.1:

Welcome Gates

Each of the five regions of the kingdom now has a welcome menu, which will pop up when you unlock the first castle in a new area. They'll show you anything new you've unlocked - for now this is just potions, but down the road we'll have some special monster types as well.

Update Title Screen Menu with Volume Sliders

This has been one of our most requested updates! Click on the gear in the title screen to access this updated menu, where you can now use sliders to adjust the volume for the music and sound effects individually.

Bug Fixing & Polish

Here's the full list of everything else that has been updated in this build:

  • Lightning ball graphics and timing polish
  • "Can't make a spell that big" error message now updated to tell you what the maximum spell is for that region
  • Bug fix: Multiple menus could be opened at the same time
  • Bug fix: Potions occasionally stacked on top of each other
  • Bug fix: Potions didn't always properly rotate as they moved
  • Bug fix: Players could recycle spells even after they won or lost the level, delaying the menu pop-up
  • Bug fix: Potions could be used on spells, the spellbook, or other potions
  • Bug fix: Catapults weren't being destroyed when the towers crumbled, and weren't moving through the open tower spaces properly

Let us know what you think of the updates in the forums! We have a very small team and we're working hard to make this game as amazing as we can - please help us out by leaving a review!

New Alpha Build of The Counting Kingdom: 0.7.3

Hold onto your spellbooks because this update's a big one!

New Spell Effects

Counting Kingdom: math game for kids

kaPOW! We've made all new spell explosions, and we think you're going to like them.  The more monsters you cast a spell on, the bigger the effects are!  We dialed the awesome knob all the way up to 11 here.  How many monsters can you cast a spell on?

New Interface for Working With Spells

In previous builds of the game, you would drag and drop spells on top of the spellbook to discard them, or other spells to combine them.  These still work the same way but will look a little bit different to help make this feature easier to understand and use.

Catapults & Progress Meter

Progress Bar

Progress Bar

Catapults

Catapults

It was a little bit unclear how many monsters were left in the level, so we've added in two new features to help.  The first is the Progress Meter.  This bar in the upper-left hand corner of the game will show how close you are to the end of the level.  The second is the catapults - they'll show up at the end of the level to push any straggling monsters forward! (Don't worry, they won't fire on the towers.. yet).

Freeze Potion

We're added in all new art, sound effects and particle effects for the freeze potion. Ice blocks fall down from the sky, and crack apart as the turns progress.  Have you tried out this potion yet?  You'll unlock it in the icy tundra area.

Optimization

With all the new goodies going in this week, it was important that we didn't bog down the game.  We went in and cleaned everything up, so the game should be running more smoothly than ever!

Revised Tutorial

More tutorial revisions - what an enormous surprise!  We're continuing to work on this every week, and we think the tutorial is in really great shape.  Let us know what you think!
