Throwback Thursday: Environment Art

This week's Throwback Thursday takes a look around us at the wonderful world of The Counting Kingdom:

You can see that, from the very beginning, artist Luigi Guatieri had a blocky geometric look in mind for the environment.  We saw this pop up in many places down the road - check out the forest in the world map! (Or the clouds, I think those are my favorite!)

If you add one part blocky shapes, one part lush painterly style, and one part bright bold colors, you'll get the environment art for The Counting Kingdom!

Throwback Thursday: The Wizard's Apprentice

It's Throwback Thursday again and this week we're taking a look at our main character: the Wizard's Apprentice!  Here are some of the early concept sketches:

We showed this artwork to a number of children and asked which one they liked best.  Nearly all of them pointed out that, well, the third one is the only one wearing a wizard hat!  We looked around at each other and thought "Hmm, that makes sense" and thus our main character was born.

Here you can see a more detailed version that artist Luigi Guatieri put together that keeps the hat and combines some of our favorite details from each of the early sketches:
